Something to encourage you right where you are

God is not so much into our comfort than into our redemption. “Wow, okay, how is that supposed to encourage me right now”, I hear you say. This week at Bible Study I was reminded again that God’s ways and thoughts are so much higher than mine. And try as I might, I just don’t understand everything that He does or allow. But, you know what, that is a good thing. As my pastor recently said: If we can understand and explain all the ways of God, wouldn’t that make us just as smart as God. Which would mean that God’s mind would be limited and small like ours. And who would want to serve a God like that? When I look at Joseph’s story in the Bible I am amazed at his steadfastness, humility […]

A cheerful heart is good medicine – proven

Don’t you jut love it when science catches up to the Bible? Almost 3 000 years ago Solomon wrote these words: “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength” (Prov 17:22) Studies have shown that hearty laughter decreases stress hormones, relieves physical tension, increases blood flow and immune cells and even has an anti-inflammatory effect that protects the heart muscles from the damaging effects of heart disease.  Laughter releases endorphins, our own natural feel-good hormones and has a similar effect on our brains to taking anti-depressants. When we laugh together, these same hormones promotesin us a sense of togetherness and safety. ** Truly God has made us in such an amazing way and He has designed us to to have fun and laugh – a lot! When I look […]

Abiding is good for your brain

~Elmari Viljoen  “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” – Jesus (John 15:5) “We are wired for love” declares Dr Caroline Leaf, well-known neuroscientist, author and motivational speaker. Brain research shows us that our minds (and consequently our bodies) do not have any circuitry or structure to handle negative thoughts, stress, anxiety, depression, unforgiveness etc. In fact, says Dr Leaf, your body reacts to these toxic thoughts (as she calls it) in the same way that it would react to a virus invasion or an injury. Your immune system sends out a response to the site causing the problem (in this case your brain), causes inflammation, trying to heal the problem. Isn’t God amazing? He has […]

What happens when 1 million people come together to pray? – It’s time

~ by Elmari Viljoen This weekend, my family and I went up to Bloemfontein to join the historic It’s Time prayer meeting. What I experienced is hard to put into words. About 6 weeks ago, Angus Buchan (from Faith like Potatoes) received a word from God: It’s Time. Time for Christians to come together to pray and stand up for Him in South Africa. Countless details fell into place in a matter of weeks and on the 22nd of April people from across South Africa (and even some from overseas) poured into Wilde Als Farm to seek the Lord on behalf of our country. As we arrived in the bus, seeing thousands upon thousands gathered and more

50 Shades of Grey vs 39 Shades of Red – A Picture of True Love

We all have our own ideas on what love is. It’s based on how we have experienced it, how we live it, what our parents taught us or what we learned in school. How do we know for sure what it is? For me, I remember at night, when I was little, my mom would tuck me in and lay down beside me and sing Kumbaya until I fell asleep. That is love. It’s when your dad wholeheartedly wants to do whatever you’d like to do. When your little brother constantly asks your mom where you are when you’re out, for no specific reason other than wanting you home again, to know you’re near. It’s when your older brother makes fun of all your boyfriends, to get to you, because he’s your older brother and he […]

How do Dinosaurs fit in with the Bible?

Recently, I’ve been learning a lot about Creation. And one of the most common questions people ask are: “Do Dinosaurs fit in with what the Bible teaches?” By truly embracing the truths in Scriptures and studying the teachings I have gotten from our Bible School, I really believe that dinosaurs were indeed created with humans and other living things and absolutely fit into what the Bible teaches. Of course most people believe, according to secular science, evolution theories and apparent fossil dating, that dinosaurs lived millions (and millions) of years ago, and that they were roaming the earth before God created people and other animals. But this creates a problem; this means thatdeath (remember according to evolution all the dinosaurs died) came before sin. And the Bible clearly says that death entered the world because of (man’s) sin. […]
